John 7:38: "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him"

Shui Chuen O

Shui Chuen O (roughly translates as Water Source Bay) Estate, is a new housing estate in the New Territories with a large proportion of its residents having moved here from the poorest districts elsewhere in Hong Kong. Many of Shui Chuen O’s residents come from the fringes of Hong Kong’s society; ethnic minorities, new immigrants from mainland China, and single, elderly folk.

Late last year we started driving a school bus to this estate, with tutors on board ready to help kids with their schoolwork. With limited economic resources and substantial linguistic difficulties, we thought free tuition that turns up at your door would be very good news.

And it was.

We now drive 2 buses down to Shui Chuen O each week, and they are almost always full. The kids, and sometimes their parents, are usually already waiting to board by the time we pull in. While the children get help with homework, their parents are gradually warming up to this mixed bunch of people who turn up every week, and have started opening up to us with some of their domestic and emotional problems. The elderly that we have met are likewise, very happy for a friendly visit.

Apart from straight schoolwork, we have also organized crafts sessions, an afternoon of sport and bible at Shing Mun Springs, and a Christmas party on the waterfront! Every week we are building more bridges, and seeing God work among the different groups of people here. Sometime soon, we hope to be in peoples’ homes, talking to them about the Bible and Jesus, and seeing even more Kingdom come in Shui Chuen O!
